In this article I'll briefly outline five methods of promoting websites which I myself consider to be quite effective from extensive experience. Not all of them may work for you, and some people also advocate entirely different approaches to SEO and site PR, but this is what has worked best for me.

1) Blog and forum comments

Probably the most effective method in terms of result/effort ratio, by far. Of course, we are not talking about stupid illiterate spam here. Rather, about carefully searching for threads and blog posts where people talk about problems and stuff related to your website, and then making a helpful post with a casual link to your site. This can work wonders (especially if your site is really helpful) and can generate thousands of visitors per day to your site within a few weeks.

2) Article and directory submissions

Old, but effective. Go to some 100 top article sites and directories and submit your site there (or a bunch of linkbait style articles with some genuine info). Is especially good at an early phase to make your site well known to search engines and increase the frequency bots are coming to you.

3) Social bookmarking

Particularly good if you have some eye-catching, linkbaiting content on your site. Some Digg, StumbleUpon, or similar bookmark can sometimes generate a ton of interest for your site and thousands of visitors in less than a week.

4) Viral videos

A bit harder than all of the above, but insanely effective when done right.

9. Create 15 Press Release submission i.e for each keyword 3 press release submission. Here we will target main website

10. Create 150 Normal Social Bookmarking, here we will target main website

11. Create 320 Forum profiles [ all forums should be from PR 2-9], here we will target web 2.0, articles, social bookmarking (150) and doc sites

12. Create 30 status updates, here we will target main websites.

Tier -2

1. Make 10k Xrumer Backlinks for web 2.0, 60 articles, 25 doc sites

2. Make 10K scrapebox backlinks for web 2.0, 60 articles, 25 doc sites

3. Make 5K Xrumer Backlinks for 320 Forum Profiles + 150 social bookmarking

4. Make 5K scrapebox backlinks for 320 Forum Profiles + 150 social bookmarking

NOW JUST RELAXED AND LET GOOGLE CRAWL ALL BACKLINKS.

All this work to be done in 20-25 days.

So after completion of this your targeted keywords will be in top 1-5.

I have tested this on 45k exact searches per month and competition level is High.

When i start at that time for respective keywords website is not in top 1000. and targeted website is more than 6 month old.
